Equity-based Journal Club

From 2019-2020 I led my department’s Journal Club at TAMUG as an equity-based journal club. Participants brought papers authored by BIPOC, LGBTQ+, disabled, and other underrepresented scientists.

In 2020-2021 I co-led a book club where we read All We Can Save. At the end, our sustainability squad, which we formed through our Circles, had a little planting event on campus!! We wanted to show how change can start in our own communities.

#ShutDownSTEM

During #ShutDownSTEM--a day to focus on eliminating anti-Black racism in STEM--my colleagues and I recalled our own hurdles of applying to graduate school, and concluded that these struggles are far more for those historically excluded from science. We organized a shared drive of graduate resources such as application and scholarship materials for Black, Indigenous and People of Color (BIPOC) undergraduates. If you or anyone you know would benefit from these resources, email me!

The Plastic Ocean Project

During my REU, the Brander Lab began partnering with the 500 Women in Science Corvallis Pod to bring the Plastic Ocean Project to Corvallis, OR. Since then, several restaurants and bars in Corvallis have pledged to reduce their plastic waste. See their current progress here!
